Genetics is a wonderful tool for examining the relationships between organisms. By comparing DNA sequences from different species we can reconstruct their evolutionary history and the history of the environment. By studying genetic variation within a species Genetics Otago researchers help in conservation by studying the effect of inbreeding in New Zealand's treasured rare and endangered species.
Genetics Otago researchers also study how the genes that shape an animal have evolved to give us the vast diversity of animals we see today, and study genes to discover what the ancestors of all animals looked like.
Genomics and modern sequencing techniques have been used by our researchers to study relationships between animals, reproduction and even behaviour. Studies by Genetics Otago members also touch on the roles of epigenetics in evolution.
