Microbial research at Genetics Otago

Microboes are the most common organisms on Earth. At Genetics Otago, our researchers study the biology of these organisms including how viruses:

  • Interact with other organisms
  • Interact with the immune system
  • Might be harnessed to deliver health benefits

Many of our researchers focus on the physiology, genetic biology, and molecular biology of microbes. We particularly focus on the way genes—in pathogenic organisms and microbes that form interactions with plants—are regulated in response to the environment.

Our researchers also study horizontal transmission in microbes. They have identified both symbiosis islands, and cases of horizontal transmission of transposable elements and inteins.

Our fungi research investigates the relationships between fungal species, the molecular genetics of fungi, and new ways to combat fungal infections.
