GEOL252: Borland

All students enrolled for GEOL252 are required to attend the Borland Field Camp. The report from the field class will count 35% of the final grade for this paper. GEOL252 is a prerequisite for 300-level papers.
DATES: Saturday 27th March to Thursday 1st April 2010
(NB. This is during term time so that you will miss the four teaching days before the Easter break. THERE WILL BE NO 200-Level GEOLOGY CLASSES HELD DURING THAT PERIOD. OTHER DEPTS HAVE BEEN INFORMED THAT GEOLOGY STUDENTS WILL BE AWAY. WE WILL PROVIDE A LETTER FOR YOU IF REQUIRED REQUESTING THAT OTHER DEPTS MAKE NOTES ETC. AVAILABLE TO YOU FOR THAT WEEK)
PLACE: Borland Lodge, near Lake Monowai; RD Otautau, Southland.
Borland Lodge is administered by the Southland Youth Adventure Trust and has a resident warden. A rule of the Trust is: no alcohol allowed in the camp. As we value our good relations with the Trust, this rule will be adhered to!!!
YOU WILL NEED: Sleeping bag; pillow; warm clothes and waterproofs; boots; map-case or similar; hand-lens; hammer; note-book and pencils; coloured pencils; ruler and protractor; calculator; lunch on Saturday; thermos flask (if desired, for hot drinks); chocolate, snacks, etc. which are not provided as part of the meals.
COST: The $140 paid for Maerewhenua also covers Borland food costs. If you haven’t yet paid, please do so or you may be excluded from Borland!
FOOD: Except for lunch on Saturday and Thursday, food will be provided communally. Cooks will be appointed to supervise the kitchen, plan the menu, and prepare the meals. Students will be rostered for washing-up, etc. If anyone has special dietary requirements (e.g. vegetarian, allergies, etc) which you did not indicate at Marewhenua, please see Adrien (Academic Administrator) as soon as possible .
ARRANGEMENTS: Please arrive with your gear at the north door of the Geology Department by 10.00 am on Saturday 27th March. We will leave around 11.00am after packing the vans, stopping in Gore enroute. We will return on Thursday 1st April, arriving back early afternoon. Southlanders can be dropped off en route if desired. The weather at Borland may be wet and cold. Make sure you have changes of warm clothes.
GEOLOGY: We will examine a wide range of rock types and structures, including high-grade metamorphic rocks and granites of Fiordland, Permian low-grade volcanic and plutonic rocks of the Longwoods, and Tertiary sediments of the Waiau Basin. The report on the week's work will be required by (date to be specified)
