Thesis: The structural evolution of the NE margin of the Otago Schist Supervisor: Dave Craw |
|---|
Project description
The project uses a particularly well-explored section of the Manuherikia River at Fiddlers Flat, Central Otago. The river section exposes metagreywacke and low grade schist derived from Torlesse Terrain sediments and the basement/Tertiary contact hosting a famous fossil locality. The project uses field observations, petrography and geochemistry to produce a detailed structural section through the Otago schist margin as strain increases towards the core of the schist belt. In particular, the study investigates changes in the textures and the amount of pyrite and graphite with increasing strain. These observations are used for comparison to the host rocks of the gold-bearing Macraes mine in order to draw conclusions as to possible protoliths.
