Koettlitz Glacier Alkaline Province, southern Victoria Land, Antarctica
Currently one PhD and several MSc students from our department are working on projects related to the Neoproterozoic - Ordovician Koettlitz Glacier Alkaline Province.
Stephen Read's PhD focusses on the Koettlitz Glacier Alkaline Province, an area of southern Victoria Land in which A-type granites, alkaline diorites, nepheline syenites, carbonatites and adakites are temporally associated. Ages range from 551~4 Ma to 507~21 Ma. [supervisor AFC]

Anton Barber studied magmatism in the Reeves Bluff area between the Darwin and Mulock Glaciers [MSc supervisor AFC]
Sally Beckett investigated the Frio Shear Zone on the north side of the Walcott Glacier in southern Victoria Land. The Frio Shear Zone may be the northern boundary of the Koettlitz Glacier Alkaline Province. [MSc supervisor DC]
John Cottle studied mafic and intermediate magmatism in the Darwin Glacier region for his MSc [supervisor AFC]
Sonia Mellish studied the Panorama Pluton, a composite alkaline diorite and monzonite pluton in the Koettlitz Glacier Alkaline Province, and its relations to other similar bodies in the area. The Panorama Pluton is 535 Ma. [MSc supervisor AFC]
Doc Richardson investigated the metasedimentary basement and local intrusions in the upper Mulock Glacer [MSc supervisor AFC]
Matthew Wynyard's MSc is primarily a study of the structure and petrology of the Skelton Group metasediments but also includes a study of an A-type granite - syenite association which intruded the Skelton Group around 551 Ma (marked by small star on figure above). [supervisor AFC]
Alanna Simpson collected granitoids from as far south as the Brown Hills, southern Victoria Land. In her completed MSc she studied the geochemistry, petrography and age of the granitoids. [MSc supervisor AFC]
