Geodynamics research

Our research is aimed at unravelling the controls on geological processes. These include, plate tectonic driving forces, crust-mantle coupling, fluvial and glacial erosion, the thermal regime, material rheology.

At the University of Otago, we apply geodynamic techniques to a wide range of geological processes including the mechanics of continental collision and subduction, fluid flow of ancient and modern orogenic belts, structure and mineralisation within the Southern Alps.

The tools we use to carry out our research include numerical and analogue modelling, field studies, mineralogy, geochemistry and stable isotope techniques.

It is important for the geodynamic modelling to be familiar with the systems and rocks they are modelling and we enjoy collaborative projects that integrate numerical modelling with other disciplines within geology.
