Franz Josef

View across the coastal plain to the Alpine Fault and Southern Alps at Franz Josef. The Franz Josef Glacier extends down the steep western front of the Alps to within a few hundred metres of sea-level. Rainfall on the mountain slopes exceeds 10m/yr (see 'Golden Rivers' feature). The arcuate forested ridge in the foreground is a terminal moraine recently correlated with the Younger Dryas glacial advance at around 11,000 yr BP. (DOC photo)
