Akatore Fault: 60km rupture(this is a scenario, it is not a real earthquake)

Newsflash! : Just a few hours ago an earthquake on the Akatore Fault, on the coast south of Dunedin resulted in strong ground shaking in many parts of Otago. Reports of damage have been coming in from throughout Otago and parts of Southland and Canterbury. At this stage we have reports and pictures from Dunedin though we expect more information from elsewhere later in the day.

Geologists from the University of Otago have compiled the following information:

Rupture length: 60km

Ground movement: Around 3 metres vertical movement with no horizontal motion.

Richter magnitude: M7.5

Epicentre: 30km southwest of Dunedin
