Study of twentieth-century literary and film texts in the context of contemporary urban Europe, with particular reference to Paris, Madrid, Berlin, St Petersburg, Bucharest and Prague. This is a required paper for students enrolled for German Honours.

MFCO316 German Cinema

This course offers advanced study of the development of German cinema in the context of cultural transformations experienced by Germans in the twentieth century. Students wishing to specialise in German film are advised to include at least one MFCO paper at a lower level in their course. Films studied in this course range from F.W. Murnau, Nosferatu (1922) to Christian Petzold, Yella (2007).

GERM141 Excursions
Semester 1

First excursions into the culture of the German-speaking countries through traditional and contemporary literary and film texts. An extension to GERM230 and GERM231, the course offers an overview of key periods in German culture, with a focus on poetry of the Romantic era, short stories from the modern era and film from some of Germany's best known contemporary film-makers.

GERM231 Intermediate German 1
Semester 2

This paper is designed for students who have attained NCEA Level 3 German, have passed GERM230 or their equivalent. After GERM231 students may choose to enter the Zertifikat Deutsch, an internationally recognised certificate particularly useful for those wishing to work abroad, administered from Germany to evaluate practical skills in oral and written German.

GERM331 Intermediate German 2

The course develops practical knowledge of different levels and styles of spoken and written German. It extends language skills and understanding of German society and culture through media such as the Internet, film and television. GERM341 Advanced Topics in German

In GERM 341 topics are offered that enable students to engage in an advanced study of texts in German taken from a wide variety of sources - fictional, historical, essayistic, filmic, within their cultural and critical context. The course is usually team-taught and is conducted entirely in German. Students at 300-level may write their major course assignment in English but are otherwise expected to participate in German. Topics include modern and contemporary German literature (18th-21st Century); Texts and Films from the German Democratic Republic, Austria and/or Switzerland; German Travel Literature; The Social Movements of the 1960s and 1970s; The Avant-Garde Movements; German Pop Literature and Films; Literature in German by Turkish, American and Other Authors.

In GERM 341 topics are offered that enable students to engage in an advanced study of texts in German taken from a wide variety of sources - fictional, historical, essayistic, filmic, within their cultural and critical context. The course is usually team-taught and is conducted entirely in German. Topics offered in 341/441 may include "Geschichte und Zeitgeschichte in der ?sterreichischen Literatur von 1945 bis zur Gegenwart" and "Rewriting Germany".
