Placement tests for language Papers

Students enrolling for a GERM language course for the first time and who have prior knowledge of German (eg GERM132, NCEA level 2 or 3 or language competence gained from time spent abroad) should complete a language test. This will ensure that you are placed in the language course best suited to you.

If you are not sure if you should be in Germ 132, Germ 230 or Germ 231, please take this test: Goethe Institut.

For a more detailed test please go to http://www.sprachtest.de/einstufungstest-deutsch. This test covers all levels from A1-C2.

GERM131 Introductory German 1
Semester 1

Level: A1
A communicative course suitable for absolute beginners or for students who have a little German that provides experience in the four language skills as a basis for further academic study of German, or for the acquisition of the specialised language of business or tourism.

GERM132 Introductory German 2
Semester 2

Level: A2
This course continues from GERM131. It is suitable for students with at least two years of high school German or passes in GERM105, GERM131. GERM132 prepares students for intermediate level courses.

GERM230 German Language 3
Semester 1

Level: B1
A first semester paper following on from GERM132 which will bring students up to the level of NCEA Level 3 or its equivalent (i.e. the level required for enrolment in GERM231).

GERM231 Intermediate German 1
Semester 2

B1+
This paper is designed for students who have attained NCEA Level 3 German, have passed GERM230 or their equivalent. After GERM231 students may choose to enter the Zertifikat Deutsch, an internationally recognised certificate particularly useful for those wishing to work abroad, administered from Germany to evaluate practical skills in oral and written German.Weekly oral class with a native German speaker.

GERM331 Intermediate German 2
Semester 1

The course develops practical knowledge of different levels and styles of spoken and written German. It extends language skills and understanding of German society and culture through the Internet.

GERM333 German for Professional Purposes
Semester 2

Level: B2+
This paper is required for the major in International Business. Students will gain an insight in cultural aspects of German society which will enable them to function in a professional or academic context in Germany. This paper follows on from Germ 331.
