Hazardous Substances and New Organisms (HSNO) EXEMPT LABORATORY TRAINING
Laboratory health and safety training
All Departments with laboratories have a Departmental Laboratory Manager (DLM) and they should be your first point of contact to arrange training relating to hazardous substances or general laboratory health and safety. In addition, departments which work with ‘New Organisms' (which includes all genetically modified organisms) or imported biological materials will have a Sector Manager who must be contacted for advice and training before commencing any work with such organisms/materials.
The Laboratory Health and Safety Advisor can also arrange further specialist training in a variety of aspects of laboratory health and safety, including;
An overview of legislative requirements relating to health and safety in laboratories.
The HSNO hazard classification system.
Management of chemical spills.
Fire Safety in Laboratories.
The safe management of hazardous substances (use, storage, labelling and disposal).
Legal requirements relating to transport of chemicals by road.
Manual handling.
Handling of human blood and body fluids.

Courses will be arranged in response to demand. To register your interest in training, please contact the Laboratory Health and Safety Advisor, Dr Rob McLaren, rob.mclaren@otago.ac.nz
