Research

Research interests are in formulation technology, drug delivery systems and physical characterization of solids and liquids in life science applications. The research in these areas aims to improve bioefficacy and safety through new and innovative formulations of bioactives. It is a combined approach of physical, chemical and biological sciences as well as process technology to sustainable formulate active ingredients for life science applications.

Olaf applies principles of applied research to design innovative products tailored for the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. He is also the Director of the Centre of Bioengineering and Nanomedicine (www.otago.ac.nz/bioengineering). He has ongoing research interests around the development of antibiotic delivery systems for the treatment of infectious diseases. His research interest is also focused on the engineering of drug loaded nano- and microparticles to achieve tuned physicochemical surface properties to enable the development of novel products to address significant unmet healthcare needs. In addition, he also brings practical experience in transferring an idea from the lab to the market.
