Research

Ayesha Verrall is an Infectious Diseases Physician whose research focuses on Tuberculosis.

Ayesha developed the Innate Factors in Early Clearance of M. tuberculosis (INFECT) cohort for her doctoral studies, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Otago, Universitatas Padjadjaran (Indonesia) and Radboud University (Netherlands). In this cohort of 1400 TB case contacts from Indonesia 25% are highly exposed but uninfected, a group we call “early clearers”. Early clearance occurs through innate immune mechanisms. Further studies of archived specimens from this cohort is planned to understand the mechanism of early clearance and to identify new targets for Tuberculosis vaccines and treatments. Ayesha is continuing this work in new laboratories at the University of Otago Wellington.

Ayesha is currently supervising a master's student in the New Zealand Health of Migrants and Tuberculosis Elimination (New HOME) study, that seeks to identify risks of Tuberculosis for people in New Zealand born overseas. She is also seeking a PhD candidate with a background in microbiology and immunology to work on next steps of the INFECT study.

Ayesha is an Infectious Diseases Physician at Capital and Coast District Health Board and teaches Microbiology to medical students. She is chair of the New Zealand Tuberculosis Guidelines writing group and gives advice to government agencies on vaccines. Her research is in the field of clinical epidemiology and host-pathogen interactions. She is affiliated to the Otago Global Health Institute and One Health Aotearoa.
