
Jill Harland, MA (University of New England)
An Emigration study of Orcadian Islanders
Jill Harland was employed as a senior high school teacher for over ten years in Australia and New Zealand. Her specialist fields are English, History, Art History and Classical Studies. Jill also taught Ancient History/Archaeology at TAFE Colleges throughout Queensland. Her Masters thesis, completed at the University of New England, was entitled, The Entrepreneurial Spirit of Arrowroot Growers of South East Queensland 1860-1980. This study explored the influence of migrant families on the emerging agricultural dominance of the Coomera region.
Jill’s PhD research focuses on the migration of Orcadians from Northern Scotland across three colonial frontiers and is entitled, The Orcadian Odyssey: The Emigration of Orkney Islanders to New Zealand, Australia and Canada 1840-1914. Later this year Jill will be presenting a paper on Orcadian migration at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver and will then be re-locating to the United Kingdom for six-months, to undertake intensive research of Orcadian archival material.
