The Industrialization of the Gabriel's Gully Gold Rush at Blue Spur, 1861 - 1880

Nic’s topic is the industrialization of the gold rush at Gabriel’s Gully as displayed by gold mining on the Blue Spur. Present interpretations gloss over the unusual nature of the Blue Spur deposit, the mining technology required to work it, and the degree of industrialization necessary to apply the technology. With previous experience as an alluvial mining engineer, Nic is exploring the influence of these factors in the transition from the short-term gold rush to long-term gold mining at Blue Spur. This work will highlight the role of technology and industrialization in the extraction of value from what was a large and rich but difficult gold deposit. This will extend understandings of the Gabriel's Gully gold rush period to the long term and complement other work on industrialization in early Otago. The work may also apply to transitions from gold rushes to gold mining elsewhere in the world.
