Scott CampbellCommunity and cohesion in a colonial port town: Port Chalmers 1860-1875 As hubs of trade, transportation and communication, port towns are fluid spaces by nature, with myriad social and cultural influences shaping the community. Scott's research looks at community formation in Port Chalmers, the major port of colonial Otago, from the eve of the Otago goldrush to the abolition of the provincial system of government. His thesis approaches community formation through topics including the churches, voluntary associations, public events and rituals, seafarer culture, and crime, and explores questions about the influence of place and mobility in colonial histories. Supervisors: Professor Tony Ballantyne and Associate Professor Alex Trapeznik |
