Scott Cappie, LLB/BA (Hons) OtagoEcclesiology in Marsilius of Padua’s “Defensor Pacis” The aim of this study is to explore the ecclesiological thought present in Marsilius of Padua’s Defensor Pacis. Ecclesiology dominates much of the treatise, yet strangely has by and large been overlooked in modern Marsilian studies. This dissertation will in some way help to rectify this deficiency. A deliberate effort shall be made to treat Defensor Pacis as a cohesive whole, again an all too rare occurrence in the secondary literature. The thesis will examine Marsilius’s work in the context of ecclesiology in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries.
