The University of Otago is the first New Zealand campus to offer Portuguese language and culture papers. We have offered these papers since 2003 for students who have no previous learning in this language.
If you already have some experience of spoken Portuguese you will develop your knowledge of grammar patterns, comprehension and writing skills to complement your oral ability.
Portuguese is taught with a communicative emphasis on real-life situations and a focus on the society and cultures of Brazil and Portugal. You will be welcome at film screenings and other social events through the semester and as a student of Portuguese you will have access to a significant collection of audio-visual and print resources donated to the university library by the Embassy of Brazil in Wellington and the Camões Institute in Lisbon, Portugal.
There is no other New Zealand university offering the range of Portuguese papers available at Otago. Only at the University of Otago can you get this highly competitive advantage. Adding Portuguese to your CV helps you to stand out from the crowd.
In order to maximise students’ contact with the language, culture and reality of the Portuguese-speaking world, the University of Otago has established exchange relations with some of the major universities in Brazil and Portugal, offering students the possibility to benefit from an immersion, in-country study.
You pay only your New Zealand fees. Your overseas papers count towards your degree so you complete your qualification within the same time frame as if you had never been away. Competitive scholarships are available to support students on exchange.
