Travel Insurance

Staff travelling privately can purchase cover under the University policy for themselves and their families if so desired. The staff member must be travelling with the family in order to utilise the policy in this manner. (contact Geoff Miller at geoffrey.miller@otago.ac.nz or ext 8175). Rates are very competitive and can be seen below or on the FSD web page.

The Cost?

The University has renegotiated its travel insurance policy, a result being that we are now able to offer this insurance to staff and their families on improved terms. Previously a range of premium rates applied depending on the destination and the length of trip. From Tuesday 1 December 2009 a uniform premium of $4.20 per day per person will apply to all travel.

Children aged 16 or under as at date of departure - insurance cover is free.

Who to Contact?

Staff should contact Geoff at geoffrey.miller@otago.ac.nz and should include the following details:
· Name(s) of those travelling
· Department of staff member(s)
· Payment Method - department account code/personal invoice (or a combination of both)
· Destination (by country)
· Departure date from New Zealand
· Arrival date back in New Zealand

There is also a requirement to confirm that no private component has been included in a request for travel insurance that is to be charged to a University account code. To this end when travel insurance is being requested a statement to the effect that there is no private travel insurance cover being charged to a University account code should be included in the request for cover.

When cover is in place Geoff Miller will forward a travel insurance card and an accompanying letter to the person organising the travel insurance.

For those members located in Christchurch , Wellington or Auckland confirmation of cover will be made via email and the staff member should uplift a travel insurance card from their relevant reception.

Travel on University Business
It is mandatory for staff to use this insurance cover when travelling on University business so that it can ensure that unforeseen risks to staff and their property are adequately managed. It is not acceptable for staff to use alternative or private insurance policies as a substitute for the University cover as there can be uncertainty about the level and quality of the protection that is being provided.
