Who to ask for help

If you need help with a work related matter, or a personal problem that is affecting your work or home life, various support options are available.

If you think that you need help with a problem in your employment, then you should raise this with your Manager or Head of Department as soon as possible, so that they can try to resolve it with you.

Divisional HR Managers and HR Advisors

If for any reason you feel unable to raise a problem with your manager, you should approach another appropriate manager or Human Resources. In the latter case your Divisional HR Manager (DHRM), Senior HR Adviser, or HR Adviser will be the first person to contact. They provide support to defined client groups, and can assist you with any problem, or put you in touch with someone who can.

Employee Assistance Programme

The Employee Assistance Programme is a free, confidential counselling service which the University of Otago makes available to eligible staff. The counselling support can be used when personal problems may be disrupting work and/or home life.

More information is available on our Employee Assistance Programme page.

Conflict Resolution and Mediation

The University mediator can help you with behavioural concerns that relate to your work at Otago.

Ruth Chapman (University Mediator), 03 479 5679, mediation@otago.ac.nz

The Ethical Behaviour Network is a group of Otago staff and students who are trained to provide a first point of contact for anyone who has concerns. The members of the contact network won’t tell you what to do but they will provide a safe place for you to talk through your concerns and they will help you identify options.

More information is available on the Mediation pages.
