Information Science Research

Staff in the department are actively involved in a broad range of research. Much of the work is concerned with creating new technologies, and we pride ourselves on the technical depth of our work.  Our work applies to various domains including health, and energy & sustainability. We have a range of interdisciplinary collaborations with colleagues in Psychology, Physiotherapy, Botany, Zoology, Computer Science, and Preventive and Social Medicine.

There are five research themes that the department has particular strength in:

In addition to these themes, the department also carries out research in other areas, including:

  • Data management (e.g. databases, data archival, analysis of research paper citations)
  • Security / Information Assurance
  • Education
  • Networking
  • Spatial data

We welcome applications from potential research students (e.g. masters, PhD), and scholarships are available for strong applicants.

For further information see the postgraduate study page.

We are always interested in developing new research collaborations with other academics and industry partners.  Please contact staff directly if there is a particular area that you are interested in.

Due to the expertise of Otago's Information Science and Computer Science departments in computer architecture, networking and parallel computing, the university was selected as one of only seven universities worldwide to be a Sun Microsystems OpenSPARC Centre of Excellence.
