US Financial Aid Refund Policy


View the University of Otago refund policy.

For students who are accessing US Financial Aid at the University of Otago there are additional requirements.

For students who withdraw from the University of Otago and are eligible for a refund of fees, a calculation will be made to determine if any portion of the refund money must be returned to the US Department of Education.

If it is determined that money already paid to the student must be returned, the return of money will be as follows:

  1. Direct Unsubsidized
  2. Direct Subsidized
  3. Direct PLUS

Pro-rata refund calculations apply for any student in receipt of aid attending University of Otago who withdraws within 60% of the payment period.

The University is required to return funds within 45 days (from the date that the student has been withdrawn) to the US Department of Education as a result of the above process.

If the University of Otago is required to pay money on your behalf to the US Department of Education as a result of your early withdrawal, you will be required to repay that money to the University of Otago.
