The Faculty of Law at the University of Otago's part of developing relations with Chinese Justice Bureau, has offered an intensive programme in New Zealand law and corrections since 2005 to senior justice officials and practitioners, including the Director General of the Shanghai Municipal Bureau of Justice.

Officials from the Justice sector who have attended the programmes include senior justice officials, prison managers, drug rehabilitation centre managers, officials from the Police Academy, and academics from the Institute of Political Science and Law, amongst others.

The programme covered the relevant law and policy in New Zealand as well as practical interventions around the arrest of an offender, court procedure and sentencing, restorative justice, rehabilitation and reintegration into the community.

The aim of the programme has to provide training in and experience of the New Zealand corrections system, which may offer a complementary focus for existing or reforming corrections systems in other jurisdictions.

The programme has been coordinated by Ms Lauren Julian and Associate Professor Donna Buckingham who both work to further develop the relationship of mutual cooperation and respect.
