The Otago Community Treatment Order Study
(Otago CTO Study)

The Otago CTO Study is an inter-disciplinary research project involving researchers from the Faculty of Law, the Department of Psychological Medicine and the Department of Community and Family Studies, of the University of Otago, in Dunedin, New Zealand. The researchers work in collaboration with health care professionals and Maori consultants.

The work has been supported by grants from the Health Research Council of New Zealand and the New Zealand Law Foundation.

The major aims of the Otago CTO Study are to enhance understanding of:

  • patient, family and clinician experiences of involuntary community mental health care
  • the optimum legal framework for community treatment orders
(or outpatient commitment, as this form of care is known in the United States).
