Standards for Admission
LLM
- A completed law degree in New Zealand with at least a B+ (75%) average across all 300/400 level papers, or a comparable level of achievement at a law school outside New Zealand with substantially equivalent standards as Otago.
- Attainment of at least a B+ in two pieces of sustained writing involving legal research.
PhD
- An LLB from New Zealand with Honours, or a Master's degree, or a comparable level of achievement at a law school outside of New Zealand with substantially equivalent standards as Otago.
- Attainment of at least a B+ grade point average for all 300/400 level papers (or equivalent) taken in prior degrees.
MBHL
- Admission to the programme will be subject to the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health Sciences) following consultation with the Board of Studies for the degree.
- Every applicant shall be a graduate in Law or Medicine, or hold an Honours degree in Philosophy, or have qualifications and experience acceptable to the Board of Studies for the degree.
MPlan
English
If your first language is not English you must provide evidence of a satisfactory level of English language proficiency. You are required to include with your formal application a certified statement of results from an accepted English language test that has been taken within two years of the commencement of your studies. For all English language test results, original copies must be supplied.
The minimum requirements for recognized tests are:
- University of Otago English for Otago with a grade of C or higher.
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 6.5 in the academic module. (no individual band below 6.0)
- Paper-based TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 587 with TWE (Test of Written English) 4.5
- Internet-based TOEFL score of 95 with a minimum writing score of 22
- Computer-based TOEFL score of 240 (Essay, 4.5).
- Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) - B Grade
- APIEL (Advanced Placement International English Language) Examination - grade 4.
If your English proficiency does not yet meet the required standard you may take pre-sessional courses in English at the University of Otago Language Centre (UOLC). The UOLC offers courses in General English and English for Academic Purposes, and is a registered test centre for TOEFL and IELTS.
