Cabinet 18: Rail in New Zealand

'New Zealand' in New Zealand Maero Journals Scrapbook, 1967-70.

‘New Zealand’ in New Zealand Maero Journals Scrapbook, 1967-70.

This ‘New Zealand’ scrapbook gives some detail of Webber’s rail travels throughout the country. Over Christmas 1923, when 18, he travelled along the Rewanui Incline, near Greymouth, on route to the North Island. Opened on 21 January 1914, with a full length of 13.07 kilometres, this line had a central track running down the middle for braking downhill; the incline was 1 in 25. The line closed for business in November 1984. Another of Webber’s haunts was nearby Outram, and the photograph and his typed comment on ‘one of my favourite locos’ are a reminder of a time that has disappeared.
