Cabinet 12: Medieval Drama

The Towneley Cycle.

The Towneley plays, a cycle of Middle English plays about Biblical stories, starting with the Creation and finishing with the Last Judgement, survive in a single manuscript dating from the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century. Unlike other surviving cycles of plays from the period, this collection appears to have been informed by a single unnamed author, often referred to as the “Wakefield Master.”
