Cabinet 12: Medieval Drama

The York Plays: A Facsimile of British Library.

Celebrating the festival of Corpus Christi, the York cycle of plays is first recorded as performed in 1376, although the only surviving manuscript of the plays dates from the third quarter of the fifteenth century. While the subject matter of these plays is the same as the Towneley plays, the York plays were each written and produced collectively by one of the town’s guilds.
