The Theatre of the Empire

Because Ireland was at that time a very dangerous place, it is likely that the prolific mapmaker John Speed (1552-1627) did not do all the surveying himself. He was reliant on work by Mercator and Baptista Boazio (1580; see wall), and details from surveys by Robert Lythe (c.1570) and Francis Jobson (c.1590). Speed's map 'The Kingdome of Irland' first appeared in 1611 and was many times reprinted. He also supplied the first printed plans of Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick. As a decorative aside, 'Civill' and 'Wilde' Irish are depicted in this 1627 reprint.
