Adelphi image

Adam's belief in the relevance of the Palace of Diocletian to contemporary architecture is seen here in his design of the Adelphi - a speculative townhouse development in London of 1768-74. The arched warehouses of the basement facing the Thames correspond to the arches that he illustrated in Rvins of the palace of the Emperor Diocletian shown on the right. In time, these became known as Diocletian arches. That Adam chose to publish this pair of similar views emphasises its relevance. The Adelphi was demolished in the early 20th century.
