Beyond the Breakwater
Ralph Hotere and O. E. Middleton first met in 1957 and soon became fast friends. Over the years, Hotere has provided drawings for four books by the Dunedin-based Middleton. In preparation for the publication of Beyond the Breakwater, a collection of 26 short stories by Middleton, Hotere was again asked to supply an image. The cover carries a detail from Hotere's 'Harbour Bar - Westport'. Middleton's response to the book: 'Perhaps the most elegant, and certainly the sturdiest and most sea-worthy waka ever to have carried my stories out into the world.'
