Marketing is not an easy game, and each publisher adopts strategies to promote their books to the widest possible audience. 'Good publishing is about making good books,' says Wendy Harrex, 'but good books have to sell.' The Press is no different from others, even though it has a solid base within the University structure. A comprehensive website - www.otago.ac.nz/press was established in 2004. A wide range of printed material is produced throughout the year - from the complete catalogue to monthly newsletters and posters and flyers about individual books - for mailing to booksellers, media, libraries, and for displays at book festivals and conferences. Some books gain additional publicity. One portion of text in Roger Hall's Otago University (1994) implied that Selwyn College was 'notorious'. This caused a small furore, which generated much talk, and possibly boosted sales. Included in this selection of Press brochures is the mock-up for the 1994 list.
