Elizabeth Batham's guide to the Portobello Aquarium was written in 1956 and first published by the University of Otago. They issued 2,000 copies. It was reprinted in 1957 (a further 2,000 copies) and revised in 1959, with another 5,000 copies printed. When the Press took over the title in 1963, the Press instructed the Otago Daily Times to print another 5,000 copies. Batham's book continued to sell well, priced at one shilling. Otago University Press has a strong natural history list, and this title, albeit a slim one, helped establish an excellent foundation.
