The Catlins and the Southern Scenic Route
In 1998, Wendy Harrex commissioned Neville Peat to write the first book in what became the 'Local Guide' series of eco and heritage tourism books. After a lot of work on funding and format, The Catlins was first published in 1998. Other authors have joined Peat in the series to produce eight books to date, including Gavin McLean and Julia Bradshaw, but all of the books have been edited and designed by Harrex. Lavishly illustrated, they are excellent souvenirs for visitors. The Catlins has been one of the most successful, with several reprints (by Spectrum Print, Christchurch).
