The
artworks on display in The Robertson Library are part of
the University of Otago College of Education Art Collection.
A highlight of The Robertson Library is the collection of
work by New Zealand children's book illustrators, which is housed
in the Children's section on the ground floor of the Library. Many
of the artists featured in the collection are from the Otago region
and a number are former Writers in Residence at the University of Otago College
of Education.
Recent acquisitions for this collection include a double spread
page from The Immigrants, published by Malinson Rendell,
written by Alan Bagnall and illustrated by Sarah Wilkins. Sarah
was a finalist, with this her first book, in the New Zealand Post
Book Awards, 2003.
In addition, the collection now
has two technically superb pen and ink illustrations by Russell
Clark entitled "Maori legend" and "Don Quixote".
Russell Clark was one of the
two big names in book illustration from the late 1920s till his
death
in
1965. The collection now has over twenty works by New Zealand's best.
Check it out, along with the rest of the collection in the Children's
section of the Library.
