LING 231 Teaching
English as a Second Language (TESOL)
Semester 1
A theoretical and a practical introduction to the teaching of English
to speakers of other languages. Topics include investigations
of what makes for successful second language learning and successful
teaching, the position of English as a global language, the nature
of bilingualism and cross-cultural communication. Lesson preparation,
materials selection and explorations of the teaching of reading,
writing, listening, vocabulary and grammar are related to relevant
theories and research in second-language acquisition, text reception
and production and also to debates in the methodology literature.
In addition, students are guided in the application of this knowledge
in teaching situations. Weekly tutorials provide opportunities
for students to discuss material dealt with in lectures, to start
developing their own teaching skills and to observe the teaching
of other students and of professional ESL/EFL teachers.
