Dr Ian McAndrew teaches in the areas of labour and employment relations, and negotiation, mediation, and advocacy skills. Ian practiced in the labour relations field in the United States for 15 years before moving to New Zealand. He was an adjudicator and mediator with the New Zealand Employment Tribunal from 1993 until 2002, and served for a time as Chief of the Tribunal.

His current research focuses on alternative dispute resolution – and particularly mediation, facilitation and adjudication – in collective and individual labour and employment disputes. He has provided training or coaching in negotiation, mediation and collective bargaining to a wide range of student and practitioner audiences, including the Mediation Service of the Department of Labour (now MBIE) and the Members of the Employment Relations Authority.

In addition to service on the Employment Tribunal, he has been a member of various other adjudicatory tribunals. Since 2008 he has been a member of the Lawyers and Conveyancers Disciplinary Tribunal, and from 2008 until 2016 he was a member and the Chair of the International Education Appeal Authority (IEAA), a tribunal which investigates and adjudicates on complaints filed by international students under New Zealand’s Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students. In 2008, Ian was the recipient of both an Otago University Teaching Excellence Award as one of three outstanding teachers on campus, and a National Tertiary Teaching Excellence Award as one of ten outstanding tertiary teachers in New Zealand.

An article by Alan Geare, Fiona Edgar and Ian - "Workplace Values and Beliefs: An Empirical Study of Ideology, High Commitment Management and Unionization” published in The International Journal of Human Resource Management volume 20 issue 5, has been selected as one of the 50 best articles out of 15,000 published in 2009 in the top 400 business and management journals and has therefore won an Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence.
