The Department of Marine Science at the University of Otago offers a diverse range of undergraduate and graduate level courses.
Students in Marine Science come from many different backgrounds, ranging from international students taking courses as part of a semester abroad to those from both NZ and overseas doing undergraduate papers, and MSc and PhD research. Postgraduate students come from a variety of disciplines including biology, food science, botany, geology and chemistry.

Opportunities for current students
The New Zealand Marine Studies Centre offers opportunities to students to get involved as mentors in its public education programme. Being involved in outreach activity expands student's horizons, teaches important skills you won't learn in the lab, and increases public awareness and engagement with science. In recognition of those benefits, the Division of Sciences has agreed to award an Outreach Certificate to those students who meet the criteria and complete at least 60 hours of outreach activity over the course of their time at Otago.
