High resolution Tidal current patterns are being measured using Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers. The ADCP and analysis techniques can measure current patterns features as small as 50m. Measurements are made using a vessel mounted ADCP over a full tidal cycle in the area of interest. The patterns are used for both research and by vessel pilots to assist with manoevering large vessels in confined ports, or provide boundary or calibration data for numerical models of coastal areas.
