MARI 412 Principles of Physical Oceanography

Paper Value : 12 Points

Course Content:

This course aims to give students a broad general knowledge of physical oceanographic processes and of the general circulation of the world oceans. Students will also develop a qualitative understanding of oceanic processes.
Topics covered include :

  • General circulation in the oceans
  • Ekman layers and geostrophic currents
  • Ocean waves
  • Ocean tides
  • Mixed layers and internal waves
  • Estuarine Flows

Prerequisites:

Corequisites:

Students would normally be expected to also enrol for MARI 419 but under exceptional circumstances, exemption is possible with permission from the Head of Department.

Assessment:

Internal Assessment 50%

Final Exam 50%
