MSc by Papers and Thesis

Overview

The MSc course usually extends over two years. In the first year students must take MARI 412, MARI 413MARI 419, MARI 495 and papers worth at least 48 points from MARI 421-451 for a total of 120 points.

In the second year of study, students pursue a research programme leading to the production of a thesis. Thesis topics must be approved by the Head of Department at the beginning of the course of study, and have at least one supervisor within the Department. Thesis research may be carried out at 310 Castle Street, the Portobello Marine Laboratory, or in one of the departments associated with the sciences programme.

A formal research proposal is prepared in the first year of study as part of MARI 495 and copies given to all supervisors and the Head of Department. Students should, on completion of their papers, immediately begin formulating plans for carrying out their research with their supervisors.  Students enrolled in the MSc are expected to be working on their research during the summer. Timely completion of the thesis will be to the student's advantage. Assessment of the thesis will take account of the time spent. The Department strongly urges all MSc students to complete their course within two years.

Prospective students should apply to the Division of Sciences using this form.

Applications close each year on 10 December.
