New Zealand Marine Studies Centre
Environmental Statement
We at the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre are privileged to be situated in a beautiful part of New Zealand. Our Aquarium showcases marine life from Southern New Zealand waters and is a window on marine research at the University of Otago.
Our mission is to foster understanding and appreciation of New Zealand's unique marine environment and responsibility towards its conservation.
We aim to lead by example, so have developed a policy to reduce our impact on the environment and to encourage others to do the same.
Here are some examples of measures we are already taking:
Education – We have 10,000 school children participate in our education programmes each year and we are visited by 20.000 members of the public and tour groups. All our school programmes, displays and tours have a conservation message and teach respect for living creatures and the environment.
Reduce, Re-use and Recycle – We have recycling facilities for plastics, paper, cans and food waste and we encourage our staff, visitors and school groups to re-use and recycle.
Conserve Resources – We aim to conserve resources through a variety of measures such as power saving, re-use of materials and ride-sharing.
Purchases - Goods we have on sale in our shop should meet at least three out of five of the following criteria: Useful/ Marine theme/Made in New Zealand/Educational/ Environmentally-friendly.
Support Conservation Efforts – Our staff organise and assist with beach clean-ups and native replantings, and organize conferences, lectures and workshops on the protection of marine species.
We welcome your ideas on how we can better achieve our conservation goals.
