Perfect for Accelerated or GATE classes!

Different programmes for even or odd years so students in combined yr group GATE classes always experience a different programme. Suitable for yr 3/4, yr 5/6 or Yr 7/8.

Spend a day full of intense science experiences with lots of practical hands on investigations in a real science teaching laboratory with knowledgeable and passionate educators. All programmes include an Aquarium visit and laboratory work. Depending on programme, may also include shore study, small boat work, dissection, tidal inlet work or Yellow Submarine Virtual Dive. It will be a day your students will buzz about for weeks to come.

1 day ( 5.5hrs or 6.5 hrs depending on the programme). Price on application.

Come sleep with the sharks and solve the murder mystery!

What happens after dark at the Aquarium? Visit the fish at night and figure out "who murdered Penny Paddle Crab?". It's a night filled with activities for groups of up to 25 students .

A programme can be adjusted to cater for your particular age group and ability. Price on application.

There’s a mystery animal to be found! Investigate how scientists classify common marine animals into mollusc, echinoderm and crustacean family groups. Have a go at doing it yourself with lots of live animals. Which family does the mystery animal belong to and can you find it in the Aquarium? Check out other animals’ main parts-if you can find them! Does a sea star have eyes?

Seashore Scramble

Uncover the secrets on the seashore by peeking under rocks and in tide pools. Investigate and understand why marine animals live where they do. Find the crabs, snails, seaweed, tubeworms, barnacles and other animals that live on the rocky shore. Do the animals all live in the same place on the shore? If not, why not? Use shore survey techniques and equipment.

Fish, Fins and Fun

What makes a fish, a fish? How do scientists group them? Is a shark a fish…a sea horse… a jellyfish? Investigate the 3 main groups of fish-bony, cartilaginous, and jawless-and how they are adapted to live in the sea. What would it be like to use your senses underwater like a fish? Find the different classes of fish in the Aquarium and do a fishy dress up to explore what parts fish have. Uses live and preserved specimens.

Suckers and Tentacles

What has suckers or tentacles? Begin to investigate the mollusc world with snails, chitons, and cockles and then focus in on a branch within the mollusc family - cephalopods - octopus and squid. Do all mollusc family members have a shell? What do they all share in common? Investigate questions using preserved and living specimens. Delve inside and dissect a squid to understand its amazing adaptations. Consider some of the difficult issues around sustainably fishing for squid.

Deep Sea Denizens

What is the Deep Sea like? What animals live there and how do they survive? What adaptations are needed to withstand the extreme conditions of the deep? The Deep Sea is in our backyard! Investigate the challenges that face Deep Sea biologist as they try to understand the deep and the interesting creatures that live there. Look at amazing preserved Deep Sea specimens and take a virtual dive to the deep in our Yellow Submarine.

Supper in the Sea

What lives in our wet harbour backyard and what do they eat? Understand how marine food chains and webs work– the who eats who in the ocean. Explore and think about how local sea creatures are adapted to catch their food, avoid predators and stay alive. Learn about the base of the food chain, phytoplankton and seaweeds, and question how they directly affect us. Explore issues regarding sustainability and human impact on the oceans. Uses microscopes and live animals.

Sharks, Inside and Out

Are sharks the killers of the ocean? Or are they misunderstood? Investigate the shark’s design and how their special features have made them so successful in the marine world. How do they reproduce? What do they eat? Use preserved and living sharks to extend the research. Find out why Otago’s coastline is a good place to study sharks. Get the ‘inside story’ by dissecting a small shark. At the conclusion of the programme, review how you perceive sharks now and conservation issues that surround them.

Welcoming Back a Native Treasure - Sea Lions

NZ Hooker Sea Lions are becoming more common on the Otago Coast and interactions between them and humans are increasing. Investigate the history, biology, research techniques and conservation issues around these furry ocean wanders. How easy is it to study these marine mammals? How should humans behave when encountering one? Can you understand what one sea lion is telling another? Could you identify your pup by smell? Use preserved specimens, sounds and DVD footage to experience these creatures.

Marine Kiwiana - Made in New Zealand

What does it mean to be a ‘New Zealander’? Trace distinctive native species from their place in the sea to their inclusion in New Zealand products that make them distinctively ‘Kiwi’. Explore how the lives of these marine creatures lead to important understandings of our relationship with the surrounding seas. Learn how they inspire our art and culture and give identity to our ‘Kiwi’ culture. Make a pōhā out of bull kelp. What inspires you from the sea?

Mâori Fishing Technology

How did Māori fish and collect kaimoana along the Peninsula? What tools did they use to do this and how did they make them? Investigate the relationship between Tangaroa and Tane as you discover connections between kaimoana species and traditional collection methods. Understand the intimate knowledge of the environment needed to stay alive. Make a pōhā and find where your raw materials come from to make the tools to collect food.
