Rocky Shore Resources

A handy guide to the common animals and plants living on the rocky seashores of New Zealand. The Northern and Southern New Zealand Rocky Shore Guides are available from the New Zealand Marine Studies Centre in card or waterproof versions.



The Guides can also be downloaded in pdf format. Please download both files for the full Northern or Southern Guide.


A Māori version of the Rocky Shore Guide is available in draft format.



Order copies of the Guide


Single copies of the Rocky Shore Guides and class sets (a set of up to 30 per school) of the sturdy card guides are available from the NZ Marine Studies Centre for the cost of the postage.

Waterproof Guides can also be purchased for $2 per copy for 1-10 copies with extra copies for $1 each (+ postage).

Rocky Shore Activity Book


The Rocky Shore Activity Book complements the Rocky Shore Guides. The book contains activities that can be carried out during a class trip to the Rocky Shore as well as classroom based pre- and post-trip activities. The activities are independent of each other and can be used in any order. The acivities are designed for primary and intermediate school age students.

Rocky Shore Who Eats Who Educational Colouring Book


An educational colouring book that features the animals and plants found between the tides on New Zealand's rocky shores and in shallow coastal waters. The illustrations show diet, feeding strategies and adaptations to find and capture food and avoid predators. Children should be encouraged to interpret what is happening in the scenes and predict what might hapen next. Creating a food web will highlight the role of these creatures in the ocean environment.

Seashore Etiquette

Seashore Etiquette


The Rocky Shore Guide includes information about how to safely explore the seashore for maximum enjoyment and minimum impact on seashore creatures and wildlife such as sea lions and penguins. There is also a poster on Seashore Etiquette which can be downloaded for display.
