The University of Otago awards generous scholarships for Masters and Doctoral study for both domestic and international students.
Domestic Students
University of Otago Postgraduate Awards
The University of Otago Postgraduate Awards are awarded to Masters candidates in their thesis year of study. They provide an annual emolument of $13,000 for up to 1 year, the payment of the fees at domestic level and partial thesis expenses.
These scholarships are available to New Zealand, Australian, French and German students.
University of Otago PhD Scholarships
The University of Otago PhD Scholarships are awarded to PhD candidates on the basis of academic merit, research ability and suitability within the department. They provide an emolument of $20,000 per year, the payment of fees at domestic level for up to 3 years, and partial thesis expenses.
University of Otago Prestigious Scholarships
There are 10 Prestigious Scholarships available annually to PhD candidates of outstanding academic and research ability. The Prestigious Scholarships are not applied for, but awarded to the top echelon of students from the Postgraduate Scholarships Application. The Prestigious Scholarships provide an annual emolument of $25,000, payment of fees at domestic level, and partial thesis expenses.

International Students
Otago International Masters' Award
The University of Otago International Postgraduate Awards are awarded to Masters' candidates in their thesis year of study. They provide an annual emolument of $13,000 for up to 1 year, the payment of the fees at international level and partial thesis expenses.
Otago PhD Scholarships
All Doctoral students enrolling for the first time at a New Zealand university from 2006 are eligible to pay tuition fees at the New Zealand domestic level. Therefore International Doctoral students now apply on the Domestic Applications.
The University of Otago Postgraduate Scholarships are awarded to PhD candidates on the basis of academic merit, research ability and suitability within the department. They provide an emolument of $20,000 per year, the payment of fees at domestic level for up to 3 years, and partial thesis expenses.
These scholarships, which automatically include the Prestigious Scholarship, are available to both International and Domestic students.
New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships
Funded by the New Zealand Government, the New Zealand International Doctoral Research Scholarships will provide up to 40 scholarships for students undertaking doctoral study in 2009.
To be eligible for a scholarship in 2009, students must:
- Meet the requirements for entry into a doctoral programme at a New Zealand university.
- Hold an 'A' grade average or it's equivalent in their tertiary studies to date.
Applications will be considered from international postgraduate students who meet the above criteria, including those who have already applied for entry to a New Zealand university. A limited number of scholarships are available to students already enrolled at a New Zealand university.
