Graduate Profiles

David Roach

David completed his MIndS degree in 2007. The following is a brief story of his journey through the programme:

"When I began the MIndS Programme, I was living in a rural town of 1,500 people. The closest university was a 2.5 hour drive away. Our town library was stocked primarily with romance novels. It was difficult to remain engaged and challenged intellectually.

In these circumstances, the MIndS programme was an oasis of critical thought and diverse viewpoints. The instructors were top-notch, the University of Otago library was especially helpful at delivering resources by mail, and the programme readings were both interesting and important. In short, it was a very solid academic experience, delivered directly to me at a point when I would have been otherwise unable to attend university.

The MIndS programme at Otago allowed me to explore my undergraduate academic discipline through a rigorous social science lens. The MIndS programme gave me an opportunity to examine my professional practice, and to ensure that it is performed to exacting ethical and philosophical standards. Finally, the MIndS programme encouraged me to perform academic research at the highest levels, and equipped me with the tools to complete research on my own in the future.

Three months after completing my degree, I commenced doctoral studies. I am currently employed as a tutor and research assistant. In sum, the MIndS programme put me in very good stead for my chosen career; it was a year a will look back upon with great fondness. I am grateful for the chance to study, and consider myself lucky to have been accepted. Tēnā koutou!"
