Studying Music

We study music for many reasons.

You may want to become a professional musician – a performer or a composer, a song-writer or a scholar. You might be interested in discovering what makes music work as a language, how it communicates to people now, how it communicated to people in the past, and what it means to people in various world cultures. You might be thinking of a career as a music teacher, either teaching privately or in a school setting. You may want to explore music just because you’re interested in it.

Music at Otago

Whatever your reasons for wanting to study music, Music at Otago offers you a wide range of opportunities to pursue your interests and dreams. We cover a unique combination of Western classical music, contemporary rock music, music technology and world music. If you want to develop as a performer, a composer or a songwriter we have stimulating papers in the creation of music to explore to a high level.
