World Music Performance Auditions

Audition dates

Dates for auditions for World Music performance will be held at the end of September and early October 2010.

Auditions for Gamelan

Audition requirements are as specified by the Gamelan coordinator on a case by case basis.

Auditions for Bagpipes

Candidates should perform the following:

  1. A traditional competition type March, Strathspey and Reel set, each tune comprising 4 or more parts. The standard of tune selected should be equivalent to that for a B Grade Competition in New Zealand.
  2. One piobaireachd of the candidate's own choice, with the limitation that it must have a standard crunluath variation.
  3. One piece of the applicant's own choice of a selection of music not longer than 5 minutes in duration.

Candidates should be at the RNZPBA Intermediate Certificate level of competence for light music, with clear potential to achieve the playing standard required of the Advanced Certificate by the end of the Piping Performance 1 Paper.

Candidates must be technically and musically proficient in piobaireachd to a New Zealand B grade standard.

Auditions for Scottish Drums

Candidates should perform the following:

  1. A traditional competition type March, Strathspey and Reel set, each tune comprising 4 or more parts. The standard of tune selected should be equivalent to that for a B Grade Competition in New Zealand.
  2. One drum salute or solo fanfare without accompaniment
  3. One piece of the applicant's own choice of a selection of music not longer than 5 minutes in duration.

Candidates should present their performance professionally and on a finely tuned instrument. The audition will be assessed on the basis of musical and technical competence, and on the standard of the instrument.

Candidates should be at the RNZPBA Intermediate Certificate level or equivalent.

Auditions from a distance

You are strongly advised to attend the audition session in person at the Department of Music.

DVD Auditions

Applicants who are unable to attend the times allocated for auditions will be required to send a high quality DVD to the Secretary, Department of Music, for consideration. Please introduce yourself in English and speak about your audition programme.

The DVD needs to be with the Secretary with your completed application form by September 1.
