Prescription

An introduction to the techniques and philosophy of music scholarship, including bibliographical techniques, notational methods and criticism of Western art music and contemporary popular music.

Course Information

(odd years, second semester) 0.15 EFTS 18 points

In this paper you will be introduced to the professional tools used to do your own music research, as well as encouraged generally to develop more critical scholarly skills. You will learn how to review music, to write articles, to make your own editions of music, to assess other editions and to use the internet to discover resources. These techniques are applied to both western art music and to contemporary popular music.

Prerequisite: MUSI 201 or 301
