NHFC 405: Natural History Film

This paper involves the production of a commercial half-hour natural history film.

Objectives:

  • Make a commercial half-hour natural history film
  • Develop an understanding of the techniques and skills required for the production of natural history films
  • Develop an appreciation of the history of documentary
  • Develop critiquing skills for analysing documentaries

Examples of films produced:

  • Tangled Roots – A film about the complex claims to the Waitutu Forest and its conservation
  • Return of the Sea Lions – In recent years Hooker’s sea lions have started to breed again on the New Zealand mainland. It was all started by a single female, Mum. This film looks at the dynasty Mum is establishing
  • Stuffing Missy – This follows the work of a taxidermist as he stuffs a pet cat and the owner’s reasons for, and reactions to, having Missy stuffed
  • Out of Place – A film that documents the efforts of the small community of Wedderburn to recreate a painting by landscape artist Grahame Sydney. It explores subtly the question of what is real and what is realism.
